Being on a prepaid cellphone plan means that you are tasked with searching for the most economical option when it comes time to replace your current handset.

While we’d all like to own the top manufacturers’ latest flagship models, these tend to be quite expensive – even when paying it off on a cellphone contract.

You may be surprised, though, to learn that some of the very cheapest smartphones available in South Africa today hardly set you back the amount you’d pay as a monthly instalment for some of the most expensive smartphone brands.

Here is a look at some of the most affordable smartphone options.

The Hisense U605

Boasting 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, a 2MP front camera and a 5MP rear camera for the budget price of approximately R499, the Hisense U605 is among the cheapest smartphones on the market.

The Mobicel Star

Manufactured by the South African company Mobicel, you probably won’t find a cheaper smartphone than the Star. It uses the sprightly Android Go apps instead of the beefier Android offering used in today’s flagship models, but retailing at around R399, this device still offers 8GB of storage and a 2MP rear camera, along with a VGA front camera.

The Vodacom Smart Kicka 5

Don’t let the size of this little device fool you – it packs a powerful punch! 512MB of RAM and 8GB of storage, together with an 1800mAh battery, a 2MP rear camera and a VGA front camera is great value for money at just under R600.

The Huawei Y5P

If you have a little more cash to spare, investing just under R2000 on the Huawei Y5P will pay off with features usually reserved for pricier mid-range models. This dual-SIM smartphone has 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and an 8MP rear and 5MP front camera. The 5.45-inch display makes this phone feels far more expensive than what you pay for it.

The Vodacom Aspire 5

Proving to be one of the most popular budget smartphones released in the past few years, the Vodacom Aspire 5 will only set you back about 500 bucks. For that, you’ll get 512MB of RAM, 16GB (!) of storage and a device that is compatible with LTE. Powered by the Android Go operating system, this device also features a 2MP rear and front camera.
